Contest Entry for phantom-of-da-opera design a movie poster for, hey- hey, The Phantom of the Opera. I decided to go for something different for a Leroux movie.
Media: Black, ball-point pen, and ink washes in red and black. Font used is the famous Puppeteer font, which I will look up and link in a jiffy. And I have [link] it is by the wonderful Jelloween, and is a definite must for any font collection.
Ideas behind poster (Warning, wall of text.)
I wanted to go for a far more holistic approch. I mean everyone is going to include either a mask, a rose, or the Phantom in their entry, which is good because those are visuals that are present in all the films. But by doing that the way of interperting more then one theme or idea is limited, (Unless one does one of those ultra-cool, include all posters which require a lot of work and detail). I wanted simple- one that doesn't say 'HEY LOOK I'M A MAN IN A MASK!' Because most people already know that, and it hardly needs to be said again.
So I did a heart that is almost suspended between black and white, good and evil, light and dark, with it being taunt as though tortured between it's choice. This heart could be Christines, representing her decision, or even Erik's and the internal struggles he faces as a character. Though no one is going to look at a poster and see this, thought it would be good to explain anyways.
Now the hand is reaching up to touch it, as one generally aims to do when in love. So basically the hand is a character reaching out to show love towards another character. But, the skin is melting off the finger that touches the heart, not clearly seen, I am sorry, but it is there with the boney skeleton finger. Skeletons generally represent death. And thus because as well as being a great love story, Phantom is also a great thriller so I wanted to add the morbid element. Which is basically Erik. Erik reaching up to touch the heart of Christine, but recieving pain, almost death in return for his affections.
And that is all. Yeah, I did a nice long, and probaly rather boring describtion that no one will read, please read it XD, so as when I finally come to actually enter it, people won't sit there thinking 'WTF'?
If you have any suggestions to improve the piece please do not hesitate to say. If you think it is utter crap, I don't bite as hard as I use to.
